Delphic Oracle

Although the Delphi Oracle is mentioned many times during the classical period for Greek plays of the 5th Century BC, this was a time of philosophical scepticism, in which oracles and soothsayers were looked upon with suspicion, purveyors of false truths, charlatans and bribe takers. This is frequently the attitude of many of the authors of the classical plays, but the characters and choruses in their plays often might express a more conservative view about the religious, political and social function of the Delphi Oracle and soothsayers in general.

The myth says Apollo's founding of the oracle at Delphi followed his killing of the Python, the dragon that guarded the place.
